How It Works

The module uses BSS138 N-channel MOSFETs on each channel along with 10kOhm pull-up resistors on both sides. When neither side drives the line low, pull-ups hold both sides high at their respective voltage levels. When the low-voltage side pulls a line low, the MOSFET's gate-source voltage turns it on, pulling the high-voltage side low as well. When the high-voltage side pulls low, the MOSFET's body diode and gate characteristics pull the low-voltage side low. This elegant design requires no direction pin and works automatically in both directions - making it perfect for I2C where both master and slave communicate on the same wires.
