How It Works
The HC-SR04 uses ultrasonic sound waves to calculate distance. Send a 10 us HIGH pulse to the Trig pin - the module emits eight 40 kHz bursts, then the Echo pin goes HIGH for a duration proportional to the round-trip time of the sound wave. Use the formula Distance = (Echo pulse width x Speed of sound) / 2 to convert the reading into centimeters or inches. Most Arduino libraries handle this automatically in a single line of code.
