How It Works

The HC-SR501 uses a dual-element pyroelectric sensor beneath a Fresnel lens. All objects above absolute zero emit infrared radiation proportional to their temperature. The BISS0001 IC amplifies this differential signal, filters out noise, and outputs a clean HIGH (3.3V) pulse on the OUT pin. When no motion is detected, the output returns to LOW (0V) after the adjustable delay period.

Onboard Controls Explained

• Sensitivity Potentiometer (Sx): Rotate clockwise to increase detection range (up to ~7m), counterclockwise to decrease (~3m). Start at midpoint and adjust based on your environment.
• Time-Delay Potentiometer (Tx): Rotate clockwise to increase the output HIGH duration (up to ~200s), counterclockwise to decrease (~0.3s). This controls how long the output stays HIGH after motion is detected.
• Trigger Mode Jumper (H/L): Position H (Repeatable Trigger) - the delay timer resets with each new motion event, keeping the output HIGH continuously during activity. Position L (Single Trigger) - the output goes HIGH once, stays HIGH for the delay period, then goes LOW regardless of continued motion, with a 2.5s block time before it can re-trigger.
