How It Works

The HC-SR501 uses a dual-element pyroelectric sensor beneath a Fresnel lens. All objects above absolute zero emit infrared radiation proportional to their temperature. When a warm body (such as a human or animal) moves across the sensor's field of view, the two pyroelectric elements detect a differential change in infrared energy. The BISS0001 IC amplifies this differential signal, filters out noise, and outputs a clean HIGH (3.3V) pulse on the OUT pin. When no motion is detected, the output returns to LOW (0V) after the adjustable delay period.

Onboard Controls Explained

  • Sensitivity Potentiometer (Sx): Rotate clockwise to increase detection range (up to ~7m), counterclockwise to decrease (~3m). Start at midpoint and adjust based on your environment.
