Key Features
- Capacitive sensing technology: Measures soil moisture by detecting changes in capacitance rather than conductivity - no metal electrodes touch the soil, eliminating corrosion and electrolysis problems common with resistive sensors.
- Dramatically longer lifespan: Resistive sensors degrade within weeks in moist soil. This capacitive module lasts months to years with consistent accuracy, making it viable for permanent installations.
- Simple analog output: Provides a continuous analog voltage that decreases as soil moisture increases - connect directly to any ADC pin and start reading immediately.
- Wide voltage compatibility: Operates at both 3.3V and 5V logic levels, working seamlessly with Arduino Uno, Nano, Mega, ESP32, ESP8266, STM32, and Raspberry Pi Pico.
- Low power consumption: Draws only ~5 mA, making it suitable for battery-powered and solar-powered remote monitoring stations.
- Compact and insertable design: Slim PCB profile slides easily into soil, pots, grow bags, and raised beds without disturbing roots.
- No calibration circuitry needed: While calibration improves accuracy, the sensor works out of the box - just read the analog value and map it to your moisture scale.
- Industrial temperature range: Rated from -40 degreesC to +85 degreesC for outdoor deployments in extreme climates.
How It Works
The sensor operates on the principle that water has a significantly higher dielectric constant (~80) compared to dry soil (~3-5) and air (~1). An on-board 555 timer IC generates a square wave signal that passes through the copper traces embedded beneath the PCB's protective coating. These traces act as the two plates of a capacitor, with the surrounding soil serving as the dielectric medium.
As soil moisture increases, the dielectric constant of the surrounding medium rises, increasing the capacitance. This change in capacitance alters the frequency and duty cycle of the 555 timer's output, which is then converted to an analog voltage by the on-board circuitry. The result is a smooth, continuous voltage signal: higher voltage for dry soil and lower voltage for wet soil.
Because no metal is exposed to the soil, there is no galvanic corrosion, no electrolysis of water, and no gradual degradation of sensing surfaces - the fundamental advantage over traditional resistive fork-type moisture sensors.
Why Choose This Over Resistive Sensors?
- No corrosion: Resistive sensors have bare metal probes that corrode within weeks in moist soil. Capacitive sensors have fully coated PCBs with no exposed metal.
- Stable long-term readings: Resistive sensor readings drift as electrodes degrade. Capacitive readings remain consistent over months of continuous use.
- No soil contamination: Resistive sensors release metal ions into soil through electrolysis, potentially harming plants. Capacitive sensors are chemically inert.
- Better accuracy: Capacitive measurement is less affected by soil salinity and fertilizer concentration compared to conductivity-based resistive methods.
- Lower maintenance: Deploy once and monitor - no need to periodically replace corroded sensor probes.
