Product Description
The condenser microphone (electret condenser capsule) is one of the most widely used sound sensors in electronics projects and embedded systems. It converts acoustic sound waves into electrical signals, making it the go-to component for voice recognition, sound-level monitoring, clap switches, and audio recording circuits.
Unlike dynamic microphones, condenser microphones use a permanently charged diaphragm placed close to a backplate. When sound waves hit the diaphragm, the capacitance between the diaphragm and backplate changes, producing a small electrical signal. A built-in FET (Field Effect Transistor) inside the capsule provides initial impedance matching and signal buffering, enabling easy integration with amplifier stages or microcontroller ADC pins.
This compact, low-cost capsule delivers clear audio pickup across the full audible frequency range (20 Hz - 20 kHz) and works reliably at standard logic voltages of 3.3V or 5V, making it directly compatible with Arduino, ESP32, ESP8266, STM32, Raspberry Pi Pico, and other popular development platforms.
Key Features
- High Sensitivity: Captures quiet sounds and subtle audio variations with a typical sensitivity of -38 dB to -44 dB
- Wide Frequency Response: Full audible range from 20 Hz to 20 kHz for accurate sound reproduction
- Omnidirectional Pickup: Captures sound equally from all directions - no precise aiming required
- Low Power Consumption: Operates on as little as 1.5V, ideal for battery-powered and portable projects
- Compact Form Factor: Standard 9.7 mm capsule fits easily on breadboards, PCBs, and custom enclosures
- Built-in FET Preamplifier: Internal impedance-matching FET simplifies external circuit design
- Excellent Signal-to-Noise Ratio: >= 58 dB SNR ensures clean signal output with minimal background noise
- Universal Compatibility: Works with Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi, STM32, PIC, and virtually any microcontroller with an analog input
- Easy to Interface: Simple two-terminal connection - just add a bias resistor and coupling capacitor for basic operation
- Affordable & Reliable: Industry-standard electret capsule trusted in consumer electronics, IoT devices, and educational kits worldwide
How It Works
An electret condenser microphone contains a thin diaphragm made of electret material (a permanently polarized dielectric) positioned very close to a conductive backplate. Together, these form a variable capacitor. When sound pressure waves strike the diaphragm, it vibrates, changing the distance between the diaphragm and backplate. This variation in distance causes a corresponding change in capacitance, which produces a tiny alternating voltage signal that mirrors the original sound wave.
Inside the capsule, a JFET (Junction Field-Effect Transistor) acts as an impedance converter, transforming the extremely high-impedance signal from the capacitor element into a lower-impedance output that external circuits can process. The microphone requires a small DC bias voltage (typically supplied through a resistor connected to VCC) to power this internal FET.
The analog output signal is usually in the millivolt range and must be amplified before being read by a microcontroller's ADC. Common amplifier options include discrete transistor stages, op-amp circuits (like LM386 or LM358), or dedicated microphone breakout boards (such as the MAX9814 or MAX4466 modules).
Typical Circuit Connection
For basic operation with a microcontroller:
- Positive Terminal (+): Connect to VCC (3.3V or 5V) through a 2.2 kOhm bias resistor
- Negative Terminal (-): Connect to GND
