The DHT11 contains a resistive-type humidity sensing element and an NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistor. When the microcontroller sends a start signal on the DATA pin, the sensor responds with a 40-bit data frame containing 8-bit integer humidity, 8-bit decimal humidity, 8-bit integer temperature, 8-bit decimal temperature, and an 8-bit checksum. The microcontroller reads the pulse widths on the data line to decode each bit. A pull-up resistor (4.7kOhm-10kOhm) on the DATA line is required to keep the bus high during idle states. The entire read cycle completes in approximately 4 milliseconds, after which the sensor returns to low-power standby until the next request.
