The ADXL335 uses polysilicon surface-micromachined MEMS structures to detect acceleration. When force is applied along any axis, tiny internal capacitive plates shift, changing the capacitance. On-chip signal conditioning converts this capacitance change into a proportional analog voltage centered around half the supply voltage (1.65 V at 3.3 V). At 0 g the output sits at the midpoint; tilting or accelerating in the positive direction increases the voltage, while the negative direction decreases it. Simply read each axis with an ADC, map the voltage to g-force using the 300 mV/g sensitivity, and you have real-time acceleration data.
